OCI Card:
- Do the online registration on www.mha.nic.in
- Signatures of the applicant is a must for
specimen signature (in case of minor, the child’s signature or in
case if the child is not able to sign left thumb impression of
male child and right thumb impression of girl child. The parent can
sign in the undertaking on behalf of the child)
- Previous Indian passport (original and copy)
- Surrender letter (original and copy)
- Photo 4x4 cm four copies (white background with contrast colour of dress)
- Original and copy of the current passport (first page and page with address)
- Fee: Rp. 2.800.000;
Whenever the Indonesian passport is renewed, OCI card needs to be renewed.
The Constitution of India does not
allow holding Indian citizenship and citizenship of a foreign country
simultaneously. Based on the recommendation of the High Level committee
on Indian Diaspora, the Government of India decided to grant Overseas
Citizenship of India (OCI) commonly known as ‘Dual Citizenship’.
OCI Scheme has been launched formally by the Hon’ble
Prime Minister of India during “Pravasi Bhartya Divas (PBD) -2006”
celebrations at Hyderabad.
Eligibility Criteria
- Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) of certain
category (decided by Government of India) who migrated from India
and acquired citizenship of a foreign country other than Pakistan
and Bangladesh, are eligible for grant of OCI as long as their
home countries allow dual citizenship in some form or the other under
their local laws.
- Minor (Less than 18 years) children, who got
foreign citizenship, but whose parents are Indian Citizens are not
eligible for OCI Card. However they are eligible for PIO card.
- Minor children, whose parents are qualified for OCI card, are qualified for the OCI card.
- PIO card holders can apply for OCI
- Spouse of Indian national but having foreign nationality can not apply for OCI
Benefits of the OCI Card
OCI Card holders are entitled to the following benefits:
- Multiple entry, multi-purpose life long visa to visit India;
- Exemption from reporting to Police authorities for any length of stay in India; and
- Parity with NRIs in financial, economic and
educational fields, except in the acquisition of agricultural or
plantation properties.
- Parity with NRIs in respect of :
Entry fee to be charges for visiting the national Monuments , historical sites and museums in India;
Pursuing the following professions in India, in pursuance of the
provisions contained in the relevant acts, namely:- (a) Doctors,
Dentists, Nurses and Pharmacists; (b) Advocates; (c) Architects;
& (d) Charted Accountants
Persons registered as OCI have not been given any
voting rights, election to Lok Sabha/Rajya Sabha/Legislative
Assembly/Council, holding Constitutional posts such as President, Vice
President, and Judge of Supreme Court/High Court etc. OCI card holders
can not purchase agricultural or farm lands.
Renewal : Whenever
the Indonesian/Foreign passport of the OCI holder gets renewed,
fresh application for OCI renewal has to be made by registering online
at website: www.mha.nic.in for
miscellaneous service and go for renewal of OCI card. A new OCI card
will be issued from the Ministry in New Delhi and new visa sticker will
be issued pasted in the current passport. Renewal charges for OCI card
holder: Rp. 280.000
NOTE: Please carry both the OCI Card along with passport while travelling to India.
Time : Due date for collection is given for two months, so apply in advance before travel time
Foreigners of Indian origin (except Pakistan and
Bangladesh) whose present nationality is such that their country of
nationality allows dual citizenship in some form or other, are
eligible to apply under OCI scheme, if he/she possesses evidence of
self or parents or grand parents:
- Being eligible to become a citizen of India at the time of commencement of Indian Constitution i.e. 26.01.1950.
OR
- Belonging to a territory that became a part of India after 15.01.1947.
OR
- Being a citizen of India on or after 26.01.1950.
Documents required to be enclosed at the time of submission of application for OCI:
- Application of OCI Card can be downloaded from the website of the Ministry of Home Affairs i.e. www.mha.nic.in .Form XIX,Part A can be filled online and printout taken, while Form XIX ,Part B has to be filled by hand.
- Photocopy of Passport and valid VISA.
- Proof of Indian Origin –
(a) Previous Indian Passport and surrender certificate of Indian citizenship OR
(b) Applicant’s birth certificate and parents Indian passport OR
(c) Any other documentary proof
(d) In case of PIO Card holder - Copy of PIO Card
and Copy of previous Indian passport/Birth Certificate and parents’
Indian passport and their marriage certificate
- Application with the self-attested documents to be submitted in duplicate along with the fee .
An Overseas Citizen of India will not enjoy the
following rights even if resident in India: (i) the right to vote, (ii)
the right to hold the offices of President, Vice-President, Judge of
Supreme Court and High Court, Member of Lok sabha, Rajya Sabha,
Legislative Assembly or Council, (iii) appointment to Public Services
(Government Service). Also Overseas Citizens of India are not eligible
for an inner line permit, they have to apply for a Protected area permit if they want to visit certain areas in India.
A person can apply for OCI registration in the country where he is ordinarily residing.
Please note
- PIO Card is valid for 15 years while OCI card is valid for life.
- Spouse of Indian national with foreign nationality can go for PIO but not OCI
- PIO Card holders have to register themselves
with the nearest Foreign Regional Registration Office (FRRO) if
they are staying more than 180 days in India; OCI card holders do
not require any such registration, they can live in India for any
period of time.
- Upon renewal of Indonesian passport, PIO
card holder has to get an entry in his PIO card endorsing current
passport number which is done the same day, while OCI card holder
has to go for renewal of OCI card which takes 2 month
