PIO (Person of Indian Origin)

Any person who at any time held an Indian Passport; or he or either of his parents or grandparents was born in or was permanently resident in India as defined in Government of India Act, 1935 and other territories that became part of India thereafter provided neither was at any time a citizen of Afghanistan, Bhutan, China, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka; or who is a spouse of a citizen of India or a person of Indian origin as mentioned above.

Following are general guidelines for obtaining PIO Card :

Former Indian
  1. Previous Indian passport (copy of  the cancelled one alongwith original)
  2. Surrender letter (copy alongwith original)
  3. Photo 4x4 cm four copies (white background with contrast colour of dress)
  4. Original current passport and copy (the first page and the page with the address)
  5. Fill the form in duplicate and sign (for children who can not sign they can put the thumb impression: male the left one and female the right one)
Indian Spouse
  1. Marriage certificate (original and copy)
  2. Husband’s or wife’s Indian passport (original and copy) (first page and last page alongwith address)
  3. Sponsor letter from the spouse
  4. Original  current passport and copy (the first page and the page with the address)
  5. Family card (kartu keluarga)
  6. Photo 4x4 cm four copies (with the white background and contrast colour of dress)
  7. Fill the form in duplicate and sign (for the children who can not sign they can put the thumb impression: male  the left one and female the right one)
For the child whose father or mother is an Indian passport holder
  1. Marriage certificate of the parents (original and copy)
  2. Parent’s  Indian passport with the copy
  3. Sponsor letter from the father or mother
  4. Original current passport and copy (the first page and the page with the address)
  5. Family card (kartu keluarga)
  6. Photo 4x4 four copies (with the white background and contrast colour of dress)
  7. Fill the form in duplicate and sign (for the children who can not sign they can put the thumb impression: male  the left one and female the right one)
Fee: Adult  Rp. 3.330.000; Minor (1-17 years)  Rp. 1.675.000

Benefits of the PIO Card:

PIO Card holders are entitled to the following benefits:

  1. Shall not require a separate visa to visit India for 15 years from the date of  issue of  PIO
  2. Will be exempted from the requirements of registration if his/her stay on any single visit in India does not exceed 180 days.
  3. In the event of continuous stay in India exceeding 180 days, he/she shall have to get himself/herself registered within 30 days of the expiry of 180 days with the concerned FRRO/FRO.
  4. Parity with NRIs in respect of all facilities available to the later in the economic, financial and educational fields except in maters relating to the acquisition of agricultural/ plantation properties. No parity shall be allowed in the sphere of political rights.
Renewal : Whenever the Indonesian/Foreign passport the PIO holder  gets renewed, an entry has to be made from the Embassy in the PIO card  endorsing the latest passport number which is gratis.

Time : Five working days
NOTE: Please carry both the PIO Card along with passport while travelling to India.

Please note
  • PIO Card is valid for 15 years while OCI card is valid for life.
  • Spouse of  Indian national with foreign nationality can go for PIO but not OCI
  • PIO Card holders have to register themselves with the nearest Foreign Regional Registration Office (FRRO) if they are staying more than 180 days in India; OCI card holders do not require any such registration, they can live in India for any period of time.
  • Upon renewal of  Indonesian passport, PIO card holder has to get an entry in his PIO card endorsing current passport number which is done the same day, while OCI card holder has to go for renewal of OCI card which takes 2 months
Conversion from PIO to OCI: Fee: Rp 280,000
